acdc and IALD “Chase the Dark”

On 2 October 2014, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) once again “Chased the Dark” across the globe. This international lighting event which is generously supported by UK-based LED lighting manufacturer acdc and their US division acdc | Corp, took place for the second time following the huge success of the first event in 2013.
This year’s event began in Sydney, Australia, at 7:00 P.M. AEDT on Thursday, 2 October 2014.; and followed the setting sun across the globe, illuminating city spaces in Melbourne, Australia; Dubai, UAE; Athens, Greece; Milan, Italy; Barcelona, Spain; Stockholm, Sweden; London, UK; Manchester, UK; Atlanta, GA USA; Boston, MA USA; New York, NY USA; Philadelphia, PA USA; Montreal, Canada; Toronto, ON Canada; Washington, DC USA; Chicago, IL USA; Dallas, TX USA; St Louis, MO USA; Denver, CO USA; and finally San Francisco, CA USA and Seattle, WA USA.
With 1 piece of paper, 1 light source and 1 hour, lighting designers throughout the world were tasked with creating a beautifully unique lantern, which would be displayed in a variety of locations, including a 19th century London church crypt and Manchester’s Central Library; before being captured on photo and tweeted to the rest of the world.
As one of the industry leaders in innovation, acdc believe passionately in creating exceptional light sources, and while the lanterns created on the night may not have contained the latest advances in technology acdc are renowned for, they were simply amazing.
acdc have strong links with designers all over the world thanks to their Baltimore and Dubai offices along with an expanding international distribution network, this along with the IALD’s growing membership allowed us to reach out worldwide and unite the global lighting community. While the activity in each city involved a small group of people, through the power of social media we were able to project our message to a wider global audience.
Both acdc’s and the IALD’s Twitter accounts show through the hashtag #IALDchasedark, the global design successes to stunning lit effect and illustrates without a doubt what a fantastically creative and imaginative group of people we work with.
Gareth Frankland CEO of Chase the Dark sponsors, acdc commented, “when the IALD asked whether we would like to collaborate again this year we said yes without hesitation. Once again, Chase the Dark was a major success. It was brilliant to see lighting designers all over the world coming together to use their unquestionably gifted minds to design some incredibly creative pieces. It was a pleasure to witness it first hand in London and to be part of the night throughout the world – the twitter feed was on fire!”
Here’s just some of the fabulous creations from the night…
