Baglan Bay Innovation Centre – UK

Overview

Located adjacent to the M4 on Baglan Bay Energy Park, Baglan Bay Innovation Centre is one of South Wales’ premier business locations attracting world-class inward investment.

This landmark building is BREEAM Excellent – providing modern quality offices together with unique architecture. The 24,000 square feet centre supports a wide variety of  Research and Development business and Technology companies.

Cutting edge innovation runs through the DNA of Baglan, and the 180 acre park is helping transform the area to secure a green industrial future.

Companies like Calon Energy Limited combined-cycle gas turbine power plants provide competitively priced electricity to businesses located on the park. Wales’ first Renewable Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Centre also provides facilities for hydrogen production, conferencing, research, demonstrations and education all running from renewable energy sources.

Recognised by BURA (British Urban Regeneration Award), the park received an Insider Award for Regeneration. Not only that, they have also received a Local Government Chronicle and Health Services Journal Sustainable Communities Award in recognition of its work to create a cleaner, greener industrial future for the area.

PROJECT

Baglan Innovation Centre is centred around cleaner and greener energy sources – the lighting was no different. Neath Port Talbot County Borough Councils (NPTCBC) brief was to replace the existing metal halide lamps with an energy efficient LED scheme that would provide even blue illumination across the building’s façade.

After deliberation, a joint team decision was taken, Blue was the colour using PLAZA 35 with Solid blue LED’s. Although this isn’t part of our standard range, we love doing things differently and adding blue LED’s is all in a day’s work for our team (something a little different).

PLAZA 35 with Blue LED’s with a medium beam (12 in total) were used to wash the building, projecting out 2096 lumens of blue light and delivering 40 lux @ 60m. Illuminating the face of the building emphasising the architectural details of the structure. Creating not only a stunning landmark but an energy efficient one too.

Firstly we made some energy calculations:
Previous electrical load calculations 2.064 kW
PLAZA new installed load of 0.330 kW

This will save a whopping 84% energy saving, not just happy with saving 4,661 kWh/annum of electricity, the project also reduced the building’s carbon footprint with a yearly saving circa of 2.19 Tonnes of CO2 / annum.

We then wanted to show off PLAZA’s powerful blue wash of light.
PLAZA needed to replace the existing fittings and a mock up was arranged to understand how the light interacted with the building’s façade from these pre- determined locations. The decision was subject to a successful mock-up and PLAZA did not disappoint. After seeing PLAZA in action everyone agreed that it was a perfect application with enhanced superior performance.

The installed solution highlights a stunning energy efficient and low carbon landmark within NPTCBC.

NPTCBC have the intention of implementing an internal LED lighting upgrade programme over the next 12/24 months within the Innovation Centre.
