Established in 1898, Principal is a collection of city-centre hotels based in landmark buildings in exceptional locations across the UK.
Their distinctive heritage and the relationships that they have with the neighborhoods and cities in which they are located are the cornerstones of the Principal brand.
Each of the hotels has a story to tell – of its history, its design and architecture, its quirks and characters, and its role in shaping the city and forging relationships with local partners, whether corporate or creative.
Walk the length of George Street in downtown Edinburgh you will find The Principal Edinburgh. Ultra-modern facilities lie behind The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square’s Georgian façade and all 199 bedrooms and suites have been given a chic new look.
It is said that the story of Charlotte Square – a fundamental feature of Edinburgh’s New Town – is the story of the rebirth of the city. How apt then, that one of the city’s oldest hotels should be given a new lease of life.
SLLD design were tasked with providing a subtle scheme to highlight the character of this beautiful Georgian façade.
To quote the architect and furniture designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe “less is more” – this project is the notion that simplicity and clarity lead to good design.
The hotel lobby entrance is framed by four impressive pillars. So PLAZA 20 and PLAZA 10 in 3000K colour temperature in a medium beam optic were used to up light them. PLAZA loves to illuminate architectural facades, steering our gaze by emphasising colours textures and detailing to give character and personality to the space.
Our PLAZA range of surface mounted floodlights are available in 5 sizes ranging from the smallest (PLAZA S3x no taller than a standard credit card to PLAZA 35 producing in the region of 1900 lumens). We know that glare is one of the most important considerations so PLAZA is available with a number of accessories for viewer comfort.
